The Sunningesundbridge lies near Goeteburg in Sweden with a total length of about 1800m. The bridge had in the central part a 3-span cable stayed bridge with a length of 640m and approaches of 600 m at both ends. The tender design was a cable stayed bridge with a main span of 400m and two side spans of 120m. The pylons have the diamond shape with a total height of about 150 m. The deck structure has a composite box girder section in the main and concrete box section in the side spans. The bridge deck width is about 25m. The scope of Dr. Saad was to carry the complete design, i.e. to proceed with the static and dynamic analysis and design different design alternatives. For all design alternatives, a non-linear 3D static analysis was carried out using the finite element method for dead load, live load, wind, and temperature effects, and taking into consideration also the creep and the shrinkage effects of concrete. As required the design loads and the design of the bridge different elements were carried out according to Swedish Code. These models were used also for the investigation of the dynamic behaviour of the bridge to estimate the critical wind speed of the deck and hence the dynamic stability of the bridge under wind.
